April Meese: Growing your beauty business doesn't have to be overwhelming. It's all about mastering a few key strategies and systems to save you time. Welcome to Beauty Marketing Simplified! A podcast dedicated to helping you on your entrepreneurial journey. I'm your host, April Meese. I'm a permanent cosmetic artist that belt my six-figure business while only working three days a week and raising twin toddlers. I'm here to tell you it is possible for you too. With a background in Spa marketing, it's my mission to help women worldwide get more profits while pursuing their passion and purpose. Let's transform your beauty business for more income and less stress starting right now.
April Meese: Welcome back to Episode Two. It's so good to be with you. Today we are talking about how to get more clients with social media and live video. And beauty professionals are always asking me, what is working on social media today?
April Meese: And the answer is video. So we will talk about how to get more clients. And when I talk about video, especially live video, it always brings up a lot of resistance and I get it because video is a journey and it's easy to get overwhelmed with what to talk about and how do we look like a pro and does it have to be perfect. And what if people judge me and you know, how can I use this to build my business and why does it take so long and why is it so difficult? And all of the things. And next week we will talk about how to get past the fear of judgment and imposter syndrome. But today let's talk about how to set up your live videos to get more clients. So first of all, there are three ways that live video won't get you more clients.
April Meese: Number one, if you are not clear and confident with sharing your message. Number two, you don't know how to connect with your audience and make offers on your lives with what's called a call to action. So you get them to commit. And number three, you just don't do it. So if you don't do it, you definitely cannot get the clients. When doing Facebook Lives, I often see and that people will sign up for these 30-day challenges, you know, 30 days to go live and I am not a personal fan of those challenges and I'll tell you why. I do think it will help get you out of your comfort zone and that's great. But usually what I see happen is the first few days people start um, you know, with a plan and they are talking to their audience with a purpose and then around the fourth or the fifth day, they're just kind of getting on and they're stalling, they're rambling.
April Meese: They don't really actually have anything to say, right? They have not really thought it through. Right? They didn't come up with a 30-day plan. And what happens is you're actually training your audience to not tune in. So when they keep tuning into your videos and it just looks like you are just stalling because you have committed to doing 30 days of video, but it's not really anything that is of value, then they tend to tune out. And then when you have something to say, they're not going to tune in. So my advice is to always have a plan, have a strategy and know what you plan to talk about. And that's what we'll talk about today. So there are some key things to do besides the tech stuff. So the tech stuff would be you want to have a good basic camera, you want to have good lighting, you want to have a strong internet connection.
April Meese: And of course good audio with low background noise. Like those are just the basics that would be, you know, the tech side of it. But here's how to prepare. So I'm going to give you some steps for preparing for your live video. The first thing is you need to have a strong topic that people want to hear. So when choosing a topic, I always tell my students, what does your audience need to know about? Or what do they need to hear from you to book an appointment for your beauty services? Okay, so that's a good question to ask yourself. What does my audience need to hear? And you want to choose a juicy topic. So think of what do your clients frequently ask you. So look at your FAQs and pull out some of the FAQs or what do people type into Google, right? So think about those topics.
April Meese: Also think about putting your topics into categories, like an "About You" and your background and you know kind of all about you would be one topic. Another topic would be the services your business offers, right? And that would be another category topic. Another category topic would be like a "How To" video. How to prepare before your service or before your appointment? How to find the right beauty professional? Those are "How To" videos, right? You might do another category of "Behind the Scenes". These are very popular. People like to know what to expect. They want to see, you know, behind the scenes of your office, your spa, your salon. This is kind of an "In The Life Of", and "A Day Of" that type of thing, right behind the scenes. Another category would be Case Studies. So this is where you really showcase your clients and talk about their transformations, their stories, right?
April Meese: Really highlight their stories, their benefits, and that relates back to your service, but it's more focused on your client's journey and it speaks to your potential client's journey and the results that they could have. Right? And then another category could be more of a Report Style video and this would be your reporting on trends. You could report on hot topics that are related to your beauty industry. And so those are just a few categories and some examples that you can expand on. I will also give you a bonus at the end of this episode of ideas on more topics. But the first thing is to have a juicy topic, a strong topic that your audience wants to learn about and know about. Number two, you need to have a scroll stopping title, right? So you want a title that grabs their attention and makes them want to tune in to the topic, right?
April Meese: So the more targeted the title, the more qualified the viewer or your audience will be. So, for example, if you have a topic that is kind of like, this is for everyone versus what working moms need to know, right? That is going to grab that audience's attention, right? If that's your ideal client, they're going to tune in. They're going to be like, wow, that's me. I need to hear this. You might have a title that says why following eyebrow trends is a bad idea, right? So that's a title that's kind of juicy that that's going to get their attention. And you could talk about, you know, trends versus the classic shape of the eyebrow. You could talk about what flatters their face shape. Give examples of trendy over-tweezed eyebrows from the eighties versus classic, timeless eyebrows. You can give lots of examples, but again, the title needs to catch their attention, right?
April Meese: So another thing would be what's known as a shocking or a disruptive title that will catch their attention. So this could be something, why micro-blading doesn't work, that's going to catch their attention. Now you can use this title, even if you do micro-blading, right? You can talk about how it's not for everyone and that some people are not a candidate or you could even talk about how one has done improperly. It can be bad. And so that's why it doesn't work for everyone, right? So really talking about, you know, what people are already talking about and you're going to dispel some of the myths that are out there and this would be why they should come to you. But again, the title, why micro-blading doesn't work is going to get their attention. What I thought she did micro-blading? What is she talking about? Right? Another scroll stopping title would be a mystery title.
April Meese: So you could say something like, "One Thing That No One Tells You Before Your Permanent Makeup Appointment", and you must know this, right? So it could be one tip that you give. It could be as simple as, you know, drink water the week before your appointment so that your skin is hydrated for better retention. Or your one thing could be something simple like researching your artists or whatever you feel is an important step that they need to know before coming to their appointment. But again, the title sparks their curiosity and it makes them want to tune in and that's what's really key to know about a scroll stopping title. Okay, so you have your juicy topic and you have your scroll stopping title and now you need to organize the content. So what do you want to talk about and break that down into an outline usually of three to five steps and this is so people can follow it, right?
April Meese: When you have an outline of three to five steps, then the audience will understand and comprehend the information better versus just getting on and kind of rambling. If you have those bullet points, I usually put them on a post-it note to remind myself and I stick it to my computer or my iPad, laptop, whatever I'm using and this helps me remember the key points that I want to discuss that day. So just having those bullet points and organizing your content is very important. Now the next thing is when you go live you want to of course entertain and be upbeat as if you are hosting a party. Now, of course, it does feel weird when you are just talking to a little hole, camera hole in your computer and not talking to a real person, but you have to remember that the person on the other side will see your energy.
April Meese: So you should pretend as if you are the host of a party and you should be excited about your own subject and topic that you're talking about. So, of course, you need to be you, but definitely be a little bit more upbeat and have examples of what you're talking about. So have examples as evidence to support your topic and title. The next thing is you want a script, a Call to Action. So definitely always have a call to action at the end of your video. This could be something like - "Do this now." "Book now." "Message us". "Call for more information". "Visit our website". "Check out our Facebook page." For upcoming specials, you know, "Direct message us for any questions that you have." It could even be something that's known as a micro-commitment, such as, "If you found this valuable, then please let a friend know by sharing this useful video with them." Right?
April Meese: So it could be a micro commitment such as give a thumbs up or heart, this video if you enjoyed it, that is getting them to engage in the video. And that's a small call to action. But of course, you do want to have some greater calls to action such as "Book an Appointment", so that you can actually get clients from these live videos. Then you want to properly promote, you want to announce the day before, if possible or right before your live video to kind of remind them that you're going live. If you do live videos at a regular time and date, then people will begin to expect it and show up accordingly. But if that feels a little too structured to you, at least, you know, send out a little notification, "Hey, I'm going live and this is the topic that I will be covering", right?
April Meese: Again with that scroll stopping title. So just to quickly review, you have a juicy topic. You have a scroll stopping title, you have organized your content and have an outline of three to five steps. You have a call to action, you have properly promoted it, and now you're going to hit the go-live button. You're going to look at the camera and you're going to start talking. Yes. Scary. I know, and even if you don't see anyone showing up for the live video, don't stall. Okay? The replay viewers don't want to wait for you to wait for more viewers. Every time I see a video where someone's like, okay, we're just going to wait for more viewers, I just cringe because the people that are watching in the replay, which is going to be about 60% of your audience, they're going to click away. They don't have time for you to wait for viewers to show up.
April Meese: And also it shows that you don't value the live viewers that are there. So push the button, start talking. You're going to announce your topic and tell your juicy title. You'll introduce yourself and then you want to acknowledge anybody that's there by name that's currently watching live. Say hello, be yourself just like you would. Again, if you were hosting in a party, you're going to engage the audience and you're going to also ask for engagement, right? So that it's not just a talking head video. You want to ask them to "Hit Reply", or "Do they agree with what you're saying"? or "Do they have any questions?" So you have to ask for that engagement. You'll finish with your call to action and then you'll push publish on that video and then later you'll go back and you'll follow up with all of the replay comments and any questions that you might have missed, right?
April Meese: So always go back and talk to your audience. If they took the time to leave a comment, then I believe you should take time to respond or acknowledge them or even just like their comment, right? This also helps to boost that video in the algorithm. So those are a few tips for going live on Facebook or Instagram or any social media platform to get more clients and to actually build your audience and build your business. So I hope that was useful for you today and more so I hope that you will actually set time in your calendar and mark this as a priority to plan to do a live video on social media and tag me and let me know that you did it. I would love to see your videos. And the other thing that I would say is that next week we're going to talk about the imposter syndrome and the fear that comes up when we think about going live or doing a live video, the fear of judgment and all of the feelings.
April Meese: And I'm going to give you some ways to get past that and help you do these live videos. But for now, mark it on your calendar. That is your homework. So as promised I'm going to give you a few video live ideas and if you want more, you can message me. And if you want this list, you don't feel like you have to write it down. Now, I will actually send it to you if you send us a message on Facebook or Instagram @aprilmeeseinc, and I will send this list to you, so I'm going to give you 10 but if you messaged me, I'll give you the full list of 20. Here are 10 of the video live ideas. So number one, interview the client. Number two, show how you prep for a client. Number three, interview an expert or a beauty authority from your town.
April Meese: Number four, do a Facebook live with your favorite thing that will make a client look or feel better or even save them time like what are your favorite things? Think of Oprah's favorite things, but keep it related to the beauty industry. Number five, give a tour of your spa salon or office. Number six, talk about how you got started in the business. Number seven, do a giveaway or a contest. Number eight, do a product review or some type of makeup beauty tip. Number nine, show behind the scenes. And number 10, go live on location. Maybe if you are somewhere in your town or if you are attending a conference that is related to the beauty industry, go live on location. Again, if you want the full list and there are plenty more, then you can message us and we will send that to you. Okay. Thanks for showing up. And don't forget your homework of making sure you schedule your Facebook Live or Instagram Live video.
April Meese: And so, we would love to hear from you about any topics that you want us to discuss, any struggles that you're facing. And yeah, we want to hear from you. So you know that connections and your reviews are what's really important to us when you subscribe to the podcast. That's awesome. The reviews are the real lifeblood of any podcast. And so, we would consider you our best friend if you took two minutes and left an honest review, and also let us know, reach out to us on Facebook, or our website, and let us know what topics you would like us to cover.
