April Meese: Well, hello, love! Welcome to the first episode of Beauty Marketing Simplified podcast, and I'm so excited you're here. My mission is improving lives, one beauty business at a time, and now I am extending that to improving lives one podcast at a time. And I wanted to just give you a little introduction to what to expect from the Beauty Marketing Simplified podcast. Other than what the name suggests, my goal is to offer weekly business advice, inspiration and some real-life behind the scenes, shady truth type of stories on how to grow your beauty business, if you're up for that! And again, who am I? I'm April Meese. And for all of those that are new to me, I'm excited that we can connect, and welcome! Thanks for being here. And now something you should know about me, other than I'm a twin mama that knows how to rock some dry shampoo on three-day-old hair, I believe to my core in kindness, resourcefulness, and courage. Those are the three top qualities. There are family values and their top qualities that will help you and anyone live an amazing life.
April Meese: I actually learned this from a lovely lady named Brenda who has the energy of the Energizer bunny, like literally a battery pack somewhere stuck inside of her. She lives in Texas, and she was born in a small town in Ohio. And at the age of 20, she found herself as a single parent to a newborn on government assistance. But she decided to work at the welfare office because she didn't believe in just relying on a handout, and she was driven to change her life for the better. And that beautiful lady was and is my mom. She leads by example. She rarely meets a stranger. And listen, she can squeeze every penny out of a dollar. She will find a way to make things happen. And so that's where I learned those lessons from. She remarried, and I grew up to parents with those same working-class values, and I appreciate that. And don't worry, I will fast forward past my college years, but I just want to tell you that's where I'm coming from.
April Meese: That's my viewpoint on things. And now let me tell you, my first introduction to the spa world was actually doing spa marketing and I worked at the spa, Dr Cooper Institute in Dallas. Later, I became an aesthetician and I moved to New York City, where I worked for a renowned dermatologist, and I worked in his office and also as an international educator. So I don't know about you, but I love continuing to learn new skills. And I'm guessing that if you're here listening, you probably also always working on some type of personal or business development. But in 2005, I went to California, and I trained to become a permanent makeup artist. Now let me add a little side note that no one, and I mean almost no one understood what permanent cosmetics was all about, which made meeting new people very interesting because of the look on their face when I would tell them what I did for a living and that the makeup is basically applied like a tattoo with a needle to the eye.
April Meese: Well, that was just priceless. But anyway, there was an economic collapse in 2008 and subsequently, I was let go from the dermatologist's office, and that gave me a chance to open up my own business called Enhancing Beauty. And this is where the story gets juicy. Because what I'm about to share was one of my proudest accomplishments behind the birth of my girls as a solo entrepreneur. I grew that business to a successful six-figure business while only working three days a week. And here's what's even better. I did it while raising twin toddlers with a husband that travelled four out of five days a week. That chokes me up to say it, but I say it not to brag because I am not any type of superwoman type. In fact, my list of insecurities is probably just as long as the next person.
April Meese: But I say it to let you know that it's possible for you too. And for the longest time I never even thought it was possible. I, just like my mom, struggled to find my way. But I recognized that when you want something, and I mean really want something bad enough, you'll find a way. And when you don't, you find an excuse. Now that's not my expression, but I heard it. I love it. And that's a #preaching for those in the back. And now, how does all this relate to you? Well, I'm passing along what I've learned from all of my challenges, the failures, the triumphs, the setbacks, and everything in between to help you on your journey. And my family recently moved to California. So this is where I've put my two passions, the beauty business and the marketing together. And we've started new adventures here, and I now do coaching and online classes for the beauty industry.
